Herbie Hancock - The Imagine Project
This may very well be Herbie Hancock’s most ambitious project to date. Three years in the making, recorded in seven countries with artists from the world over, The Imagine Project, is a combination of well known songs from the likes of Peter Gabriel, Bob Dylan, Sam Cooke, and Bob Marley with the title track being that well known ballad by the late John Lennon. The one exception is a beautifully crafted version of Lord Baden Powell’s “Tempo de Amore” highlighted by Lucas Martin’s bassline and CeU’s enchanting vocals.
The guest list includes such diverse talents as The Chieftains, Los Lobos, Derek Trucks with Susan Tedeschi, Chaka Kahn, Wayne Shorter, John Legend, Pink, Seal and India Arie. In fact it is her voice that is featured on the largest part of “Imagine” culminating in a joyous Caribbean flavored chorus that underlines the “world” aspect of the recording.
One review I read stated that the album as a whole is uneven, with little or no risk taken. I think what’s more important here is that imagination doesn’t always have to be risky, in fact sometimes it can be the safest place in our world, and that it’s OK to go there. “Imagine all the people, living life in peace.”
